Publishing a Digital Accessibility Statement

In an increasingly digital world, the universality and accessibility of online services have become a priority. Digital accessibility aims to ensure that all people, including those with disabilities, can use digital services without obstacles and access the same content and features.
A key component of this approach is the accessibility statement, a crucial document made available to end users.

What is an Accessibility Statement?

The accessibility statement is a document that informs users about the accessibility of a digital service and serves as proof to the authorities. It details the aspects of the service that are accessible, those that are not and the measures users can take to access content that is not accessible.

Why is it Mandatory?

The accessibility statement is mandatory for all organizations subject to digital accessibility obligations. This document serves as proof to users and authorities, demonstrating the organization's commitment to complying with accessibility standards.
It also provides essential information about the content and features that some users cannot access and the alternative means available to them.
In the United States, a document called VPAT (Voluntary Product Accessibility Template) is used to declare the accessibility status of digital products and services.

How to Create a Digital Accessibility Statement?

  1. Compliance Evaluation: The first step in creating an accessibility statement is to conduct a compliance evaluation of the digital service. This evaluation identifies the aspects of the service that meet accessibility standards and those that need improvements.
  2. Drafting the Statement: Once the evaluation is complete, it is time to draft the accessibility statement. This statement should be clear, concise, and accessible to all users. It should include information on the parts of the service that are accessible, the accessibility limitations, and the measures users can take to access content that is not accessible.
  3. Publication and Updates: The accessibility statement should be published on the organization's website and regularly updated to reflect ongoing improvements in accessibility.
